Michi Zeltner here shows all thats right and at the same instant wrong with the wicked feedback loops that occur in depression. I know of no other subculture, where your products define your fame and your "value" as much as in hackerspaces. If your code is great, your thing awesome, your effort hard, you are respected, you get social value. But if something goes wrong, you fail in some thing, what then? Doing great software, building great things, should in no way be your source of personal or social value.

The system of self-esteem being trigger by other people is fucked, just fucked. One should not need reasons to be content with oneself. One should rather find triggers that depend on nothing external.

A hackerspace for a lot of people is interesting, because they get respect and social back-slapping for avoiding facing them selfs, their problems, and rather doing stuff. Stuff that is maybe not very useful, but keeps you busy, and hence you forget your problems and the nexus of bad thoughts. And, the "system" even grants you social respect for that. For not facing yourself. For experiencing flow.

I am pretty sure thats not very helpful for a depressive person, although its clear why depressive people accumulating in hackerspaces.

In no way do I know the solution of liking yourself, but very likely, hackerspaces are not the way.
